What I'm saying is that I don't need the combat skills from the Knight Discipline to claim I'm a knight. You can get Single wepaon specialization as a warrior and Resist fear from a few places and still call yourself a knight and have the same combat prowess as one that took the discipline.Kaylan Chargeender wrote:Kiel ReidThanks, that is exactly what I was asking, and I totaly missed that use. I was HOPING for a method that didnt involve perma death, so I hope I can ferret out another way. That is the kind of thing I was asking though. There is if you are a full eater of the dead...
ollieI cant say I agree. A PC can say they are whatever they want to say in game, but if they do not have the skills to back it up, then they are just lying.Honestly, I ignore what the disciplines and paths are named for this reason. If I claim I'm a knight and my roleplay supports the claim, chivalry and all that jazz that goes with claiming one is a knight, then there isn't really a need for it.
You can claim whatever you want about your character and not have the appropriately named discipline.

a Knight with no skills in combat, isnt a knight...he is just a stand up guy. a mage with no magical talent is just a fraud.
On top of that, what prompted the post was Kaylan looking to fill certains duties with PCs skilled in a specific way. I was looking to see if there was a way he could verify what the PCs he selects from say, is the truth. some skills can be demonstrated...like resist fear and crush and vorpal, but skills such as vigor and determination are harder to test without attacking a PC, and for things like Vigor there isnt an in game way to prove that since there are so many ways to get to a certain LP total.
so...that.
You can be an arcanist without being a full fledged wizard as well.
Besides, there is a skill for this all ready if you really want to know what someone is capable of. Interrogate/torture them. Just word it in such a way that it makes sense in game and not at all meta-gamey. (I.E. instead as asking a person if they have determination, as them would they be able to crawl away after being beaten severely). And as long as they don't want to resist the affect of interrogation/torture in anyway that is possible, then it is the truth.
Or as someone already said, just ask the PC and most players are willing to talk about their skills.
Or something fun for RP, if a person doesn't live up to the expectation of duties that they said they can perform, then brand them as a liar in game for all to see that they are not trustworthy. (Assuming you have them swear some oath of service that would be broken by their being untruthfull)
