Figured I'd start off this lovely topic. Yeah, I know NPCs will be discussing it but, figured we could all blather on aimlessly here till we see what will come of this spell.

For those that don't know:

Carapace (level 2 arcane spell)
Casting Time: 10 minutes (no focus circle allowed)
Effect: grants user 9 armor points covering the legs, arms, and chest over which no armor may be worn. These points count as heavy armor as far as skill use is concerned. This armor, however cannot be repaired nor healed nor removed by any other means than taking the damage. A helmet may be worn in addition to this armor. This armor will not protect against nerve pinch.

My thoughts are to add in the line "... as far as skill use is concerned, except utilize armor." This fixes the skill in my mind.

Granted there could be a 4th level spell that allows for the use of utilize.

I agree, it should not be allowed to be utilized.

However, I think that the casting time should be increased, perhaps to 15 minutes.

Definitely increase the time, it shouldn't be the same as field repair.

Agreement on the additional time and also with the spell not able to be stacked with utilize for doing that to a full-path warrior would make things unbalancing.

It already is 15 minutes to cast on anyone other than the arcane him/herself... (since you need to cast imbue first)

Just clarifying for those that do not know the arcane rules...

And I kinda like the 10/15 since that already feels like an eternity when out on plots...

I have no problem with the long arcane times. (Would have no problem with 20 minutes I think.) The only thing I haven't really liked so far is the time on Sage.

I dont think he is referring to the spell Eric. I think he is simply referring to the fact that it takes 15 minutes of babbling for a sage to confer a bonus of any kind and it would take 45 minutes for them to give all 3 of their bonuses. Thats a lot of babbling and even a king bull shitter like me has a hard time babbling for 15 minutes about a narrow topic without just repeating myself over and over and over and over again.

yeah, I know. My point is why give them another 15+ minute ability. With the 10, it's at least a bit shorter than that if they use it themselves. And if it's cast by someone else they can talk and at the end of the spell, their talk is done too.

How is the carapace spell giving the sage another 15+ minute ability???

They are the path that benefits the most from the spell, and it isn't difficult to gain 2nd level arcane, since you can have a full path and discipline in addition to it.

What I meant with my Sage comment is completely off-topic, my bad. I just meant what Evan explained.


As for it taking a short time to cast, I don't see anything wrong with upping 15 minutes. (15 for the caster, 20 for someone else).

I don't feel this spell should be quicker than someone can field repair.

Course it doesn't really compare to field repair. A better comparison is the warrior's utilize recovery. This is 5 minutes for 6 (if the user is in heavy armor). Compare that to the 10 (or 15) for 9 and carapace isn't that great, and the warrior still has the armor below it that can be field repaired.
