Weapon question: the mace

Now I have made plenty of boffer swords and even a couple shields. What is the best way to make a mace? Thanks in advance.
Start with a sword without a crossguard, add an open cell/pillow foam "head". Make sure it is WELL secured, and the punch several holes on each side/facing in the duct tape with something like a section of sturdy coat hanger wire so the foam can breathe and will return to its original shape after a hit. No holes will result in a deformation like if one crushed an empty milk jug.
