Press
There is no physical contact allowed in combat but at times you will need to get someone out of
your way. This is simulated by doing a Press maneuver. Those whose racial boons and/or
disciplines allow may make or defend against one Press per life point spent. If a character is
granted a Press maneuver from more than one source (i.e. one from a racial boon and one from a
discipline skill) they may perform two consecutive Presses per life point but still may only resist
one Press per life point. To deliver a Press, hit any part of the target's body, weapon, or shield
with your weapon and call "Press." The character you are pressing can counter your Press by
using his or her Press skill. If a person chooses not to or is unable to counter then they must take
two or more steps in the direction you designate and let you pass. They cannot jump back in
front of you before you pass.

I just wanted to know that when I designate a direction that I want them to go, for instance "press left", is it my left or the target's left that they move? I thought it might be important to know so there's no confusion.

You usually just point in the direction for designation. Left and Right are subjective. However, you can really do anything as long as the point gets across. Smoke signals and morse code are probably excessive.

Well don't you think that people should know who's left? I think it's a tiny problem that can be easily fixed and can stop some confusion. I would hate to be in a battle and then press someone to the left and then have them go to the right and stop and say "oops I meant the other way in the middle of a battle". All we would have to do is in the skill description of press, just have it say that the direction designated is from the target's or attacker's point of view. Simple, easy, problem solved right?

no, it's not a problem. You are assuming left vs. right. The rules don't care how you tell them. This is the way it is meant to be. Beyond the word "Press", just get the point across.

So in the middle of a battle with everyone fighting around me and I press someone to the left I have to take extra time to make sure that they go the right way to get the point across?

It is hard to think in combat.

If you say press right the person will go to their right so I dont think we should do anything that is against that human impulse.

You say press right then the person should go to their right. The buren for figuring it out is up to the presser.

So when I press I should assume that they will go to their right when I say press right. ok thanks, I think that maybe that should be written down though so that everyone knows that when they get pressed in a direction it should be from their point of view which they will probably do anyways, but just so that it's known to everybody.

Sorry for so many questions lately guys. I'm just new and tryin to figure stuff out.

Yes I think that is a fair assumption.

If the person gets confused though, then they do. It is one of those things you should flow with as dissrupting combat to correct the mistake would be bad.

When I say such a thing I am not talking about a blatent move at cheating.

the telling people "no the other way" has happened and its not a problem, players respect each other and know little stuff like that happens all the time, its not a problem

It's not really so much a problem as it is an inconvenience. I know that it's not the worst thing in the world. I just thought that press in combat might go smoother if everyone agreed on which direction to go, and I was wondering if that already existed but wasn't written down, but I guess I'll just have to roll with the punches on this one. Thanks guys.

As long as they move things should be all right.

Now I'm from a school of putting a shield against a person and moving them physically, but FH doesn't allow that (sad Stark), but I respect their rules.

Oh how I miss the days of putting your foot to someone shield and watching them move.

Of all the times i have used this skill I point the direction, and they go it. Never once had an issue.

I understand the desire to have whose direction in the rules.(i love to clarify rules, sometimes the only reason I get in the morning.) But in this instance, in the heat of combat NO ONE is going to know who's right. Just hit them, and point, and everything will go fine.

Jaycen,

I go back and forth about how physical a game I would like. Part of me loves the kicking the shield thing too.

I fully understand the FH stance on safety and 'realism'. I started in a LARP with a lot more physical combat so it's what I know (actually I started in a Vampire LARP, but we don't talk about that).

I really thrilled at those times when it was about how good of a fighter you were, not what skills you purchased. But part of that is also the style fo the game being run. The other LARP I played got away from the concept of being good was better than buying skills.

I enjoy FH/WH for reasons other than the fighting intensity. When I started playing FH I was warned about a few players who fought "too hard", when I got to face off against them as an NPC I felt right at home.
