If your character is occupied for several hours, you can always NPC.
No, you don't have to go to sleep right after killing someone. What I was suggesting is you can't switch to a new character until after you HAVE gone to sleep. This merely prevents cheezy escapes via instant transformation into another character.
Aother option for switching characters is using the old CARPS rule for going out of game.
You simply go out to the woods (or to whatever location your character will be for awhile) and do a thirty count. If anyone else is present, you ask if anyone minds you going out of game. If not, put a fist over you head and you're now out of game.
Tell NPC camp where your old character is and which character you're now bringing in, then go change costumes.
Go to the place where your next character will be entering game. If anyone else is there, ask if anyone minds you coming into game. If not - poof! - your new character is now in-game.
