I usually say it from my perspective but point so it's clear.

Yeah, people usually figure it out. Most times it's only important they know they must actually let you pass regardless of which way that matters most.

With me, if I'm pressing someone, I'll usually hit them with my weapon on the side I want them to go.

IE. We are facing each other and hit you on your right arm and say press or press right, The person I am pressing has always moved AWAY from the weapon because it makes no sense to move into the weapon. By moving "herding" them in this way it's easy to convey which way you want them to go.
