That's just it.. they are both 'following the rules' and that's the problem.

I'd love to do it. I'll go through it with a fine toothed comb and find all the wording issues and functionality problems to make a recommendation of a shiny new edition retooled to be the best it can be. But, I'd need permission to tweek lots of things.

I don't think the founders would go for it.

Simple solution...state the PoV is not immune to magical attacks. That makes the person pretty open if one were to waylay them with magical attacks for let's say -10 based on magic damage is dead with no coming back if under the effects of PoV.

The magical version of driving a stake through someone's heart.

Onimaster, what tweaks/rule changes do yo have in mind. I'm always interested in new ideas to make the system better.

As for the transmutation potions, here is a simple fix.

You must be in postive life for the potion to work. If you take a transmutation potion while in negatives it kills you (aka, it just like a death blow). Since your body is in a weaken state it can not handle the change and it ends up killing you.

or anytime a potion calls for a life point change, it may only reduce, never increase life points. so the wording could be

"reduces life points to five. If the target has less, they remain at their current total"

we develope standard wording, like above for effects and then just make sure they are in the description of the potion,

No, that's certainly not always the case, sometimes it may be a mistake or misreading but there have been quite a few times that I have seen potions used completely wrong. I can think of many occasions where things that are clearly stated on the tag in no uncertain terms is either ignored or "forgotten".

I like Aaron's solution with the caveats of course of cure life and potions specifically designed to work in negatives.

someone could be master of every path in the game and still be killed by a master alchemist.....not sure what my point is....

Not true at all if the person using the potions follows everything on the tag. Potions are all situational. And that crazy crystal potion got nixed. Hopefully nothing like it will get into game again.

Yeah and like I have said, people DON'T use potions like they are supposed to be used, that potion puts the user to sleep as well and the user doesn't get a chance to resist it. Everyone needs to start reading their tags when they use a potion. I helped with most of the potions and spells in the game and have been an alchemist ever since the second event ever and I still don't know every effect and disadvantage on every potion. People need to READ THE TAGS BEFORE USING A POTION. I know of one person I've NEVER actually seen use a potion correctly.

The user is affected no matter what. Like Aaron has said, assume that if it doesn't say that you can do it that you can't. Choking Cloud clearly states that the user falls asleep. It doesn't say that the user can resist the sleep effect, it says they fall asleep.

if its played that way than i can safley say that almost everyone that has ever used that potion has used it wrong, but i would assume that if something says you fall asleep, but you are immune to sleep, that you do not fall asleep.

We would never put a sleep potion into a game that allows one person to wipe out a bunch of people. We may have made mistakes on other potions, but any time sleep has come up we have been uber cautious so I can say (and this is from the GM who works least with potions and spells) with 100% certainty that the intent of the potion was for the user to fall asleep regardless of the skills that person might have.

OK, potion class next event for EVERY alchemist since apparently our PC populous can't read. I could definitely see how that could be read like that, but every potion effect that can affect you trumps whatever potion you may have on you at the time. So, if you take a potion that says you are immune to sleepl then choose to use a potion that says you fall asleep, you fall asleep. For instance if you are in negatives and take a cure potion then an extend the count time potion you don't extend the count time from when you took the first potion. If your count runs out because you got interrupted you can't say well I had time to take a potion so I'll just switch which one went first. Effects go in the order that they happen.

try again.

Chocking cloud not only says the user is affected by lash sleep,it specifically says the user CAN resist it.
