Oooo! I like the 'reserves' idea! Playing an elderly cripple, I don't intend on being very active as a PC. Reservist duty will chase away the bordom of an Inn-bound character.
It'll be ESPECIALLY nice if it means I'll be NPCing one weekend a month and two weeks a year!
